The Global Director of External Diligence and Assurance at GSK leads the development, delivery and implementation of the global external due diligence strategy and supporting programs for the GSK enterprise. This role drives the due diligence business process by overseeing supporting databases, systems and diligence programs across the GSK enterprise and is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the ethical treatment of animals used in research by external partners, including contract research organizations (CROs) and academic research institutions (AROs) and purchased via animal vendors. This leadership role involves influencing animal welfare policies for externalized research, conducting rigorous audits, and fostering strong relationships to promote best practices in animal welfare externally. The incumbent is responsible for delivery of an efficient, transparent, and consistent global approach for animal welfare oversight of third-party research activities and animal welfare audits and will direct the management of the GSK enterprise-wide 3rd party animal welfare risk.

Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for animal welfare oversight of external partners/third party research.
Ensure alignment of external partner animal welfare practices with GSK’s policies, regulatory requirements and adherence to the principles of scientific integrity and the 3Rs.
Author and develop animal welfare due diligence standards, guidance documents and SOPs
Oversee the conduct of thorough audits of external partner facilities, protocols, and practices.
Lead and mentor a team of animal welfare audit specialists. Set direction for best approaches to auditing, develop and implement auditor training for matrixed GSK animal welfare audit specialists.
Contribute to the creation, modification and enforcement of GSK’s animal welfare policies, standards and procedures at external parties using animals on behalf of GSK.
Ensure external partners are informed of and comply with GSK’s animal welfare standards; align with procurement partners to define contractual agreements and MSA language to ensure adherence to GSK animal welfare policies and standards.
Develop detailed third-party audit reports, identify areas for improvement, and ensure corrective actions are communicated and implemented.
Manages, tracks and ensures appropriate response to audit findings and CAPAs with internal animal research community, animal welfare audit specialist and 3rd party organizations. Monitor compliance through regular follow-ups and re-assessments.
Oversee, monitor and respond to any animal welfare incidents reported at third party facilities.
Develop and deliver training programs for external partners and internal stakeholders to enhance animal welfare awareness, promote animal welfare and the 3rs and ensure compliance with GSK policies.
Provide ongoing internal support and guidance to ensure continuous improvement in external animal research initiation proposals and the direct the appropriate selection of preferred third parties.

Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external partners on all external partner welfare matters.
Diligence SME responsible for tech partner interfaces (internal – Research Tech; external – Process Unity) and contributes to the ongoing due diligence system reviews, improvements, and upgrades.
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor the effectiveness of animal welfare. programs. Seek opportunities to partner with third parties to embed 3rs best practices on GSK sponsored research.
Provide regular reports and updates to senior leadership and governance councils on the status of external animal welfare compliance at external institutions.
Forecast and manage budgets associated with due diligence activities.
Why you?
Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
Advanced degree (Ph.D. or DVM) in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Biology, or a related field.
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Extensive experience conducting audits and assessments in a research environment.
Veterinary Board Certification Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM/ECLAM)
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
In-depth knowledge of international animal welfare regulations and standards (e.g., AAALAC, OLAW, EU Directive 2010/63/EU).
Strong leadership and management skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a matrixed global environment.
Proficient in strategic planning and policy development.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrates a strong commitment to ethical principles and the humane treatment of animals.
Meticulous in conducting audits and reporting findings.
Capable of developing and implementing long-term strategies for animal welfare compliance and improvements at third parties.
Knowledge of complex animal models and ensure they are evaluated rigorously against established animal welfare regulatory standards, ethical guidelines as well as scientific needs.
