Job Summary

The Dental College of Georgia's (DCG) Department of Periodontics at Augusta University seeks to hire a Department Chair. The Chair reports directly to the Dean of the DCG and provides leadership and guidance in teaching, research, and service for the Pre-Doctoral Dental Medicine (DMD) Program and the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics. The Chair is responsible for departmental faculty development, scheduling and productivity by ongoing mentorship, monitoring, and assessment. This position is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the pre-doctoral (DMD) Periodontics curriculum to ensure compliance with the DCG's mission, with CODA accreditation standards, with regular monitoring of student academic progress. The Chair also provides administrative leadership for the Periodontics dental residency program, including resident admissions decisions, resident development, and professional conduct, assessing residency program productivity and program compliance with accreditation standards. This position is a full-time administrative faculty position with a rank of Associate Professor or Professor, and this position does not meet the requirements to be considered on tenure track.

Responsibilities

As a senior member of the DCG's Administration, the Chair of Periodontics will provide:
  • Management of the DMD Program in Periodontics
    • Leadership and guidance for DMD Periodontics curriculum planning, implementation, evaluation, reporting, and review.
    • Management of the DMD Periodontics curriculum to ensure compliance with the college's mission, accreditation standards and achievement of published student learning objectives.
    • Development of academic schedules and coordination of classroom, laboratory, and clinic assignments for implementation of the DMD Periodontics curriculum.
    • Monitoring of DMD Periodontics course enrollment, curriculum inventory reports and attendance data in accordance with college and institutional policy and procedures.
    • Oversight for the development, administration, and analysis of DMD Periodontics courses, student and peer evaluations of departmental faculty.
    • Monitoring of student completion of the DMD Periodontics program's didactic and clinical expectations including course remediation activities as needed to ensure timely progression and promotion toward graduation
    • Oversight for the collection and management of confidential and sensitive assessment data required for student academic progress and review assessment.
    • Periodontics dental academic program assessment information for the DCG for the purpose of institutional decision-making and policy development


  • Management of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics:
    • Provide leadership and guidance for the Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics in the management of the Periodontics dental residency program admissions process including- developing and publishing residency admissions criteria, screening applications, conducting interviews, admissions decisions, and the orientation/onboarding of new residents.
    • Provide leadership and guidance for the Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics in the Development, implementation, and assessment of the Periodontics residency dental education program clinical curriculum, including patient care in college clinics, hospital environments and other affiliated ambulatory care extramural sites.
    • Provide leadership and guidance for the Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics in the monitoring of Periodontics residents, professional conduct and compliance with institutional policy and procedure.
    • Provide leadership and guidance for the Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics in developing, promoting, and monitoring of Periodontics dental resident research opportunities.
    • Provide leadership and guidance for the Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics in the oversight of Periodontics dental residents, academic progress and remediation activities to ensure their completion of program certificate requirements.
    • Provide leadership and guidance for the Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics in the monitoring of Periodontics dental resident education program compliance with accreditation standards and responding to ADEA/CODA academic surveys for advanced education in Periodontics and ensure the timely submission of these surveys.


  • Leadership and Support for Periodontics Dental Faculty Members
    • Management of departmental faculty development including goal setting, monitoring career progress, mentoring, periodic assessment, and annual reviews.
    • Recruitment of departmental faculty as needed to ensure adequate staffing levels for the Periodontics DMD and residency programs.
    • Coordinating participation of Periodontics dental faculty in departmental, college-wide, and campus-wide research and scholarly activities.JOB IS FROM: italents.netVIEW
    • Monitoring clinical faculty production and treatment quality in direct patient care delivery environments.
    • Supporting college and university administrative service efforts by aligning departmental faculty with appropriate college, institutional and professional committees and boards.
    • Communication of college and university programmatic and personnel changes to CODA in accordance with accreditation compliance guidelines


  • Reporting / Working Relationships
    • Reports to: Dean of The Dental College of Georgia
    • Partners with: DCG Department Chairs and DCG Associate Deans
    • Direct reports: Department Faculty and Staff
    • Relates to the MCG Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and the DCG Service Line Chief for Hospital Dental Services with MCG/Wellstar.


Required Qualifications
  • DDS/DMD, completion of a CODA-accredited advanced dental education program in Periodontics, board certification by the American Board of Periodontics, and eligibility for licensure by the Georgia Board of Dentistry. This is a full-time administrative faculty position at the associate or full professor level. Salary, rank, and tenure status for this position are commensurate with qualifications.
  • Experience equivalent to five years in dental education that includes strategic planning, academic assessment, teaching, research/scholarship, and college/institutional committee service.
  • Demonstrated ability for effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills and an ability to balance a focus on the strategic mission and vision of the institution and college with attention to the tactics and goals of the departmental administrative unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and prepare and present reports effectively.
  • Interest/passion in working closely with faculty, students, residents, and staff to promote engagement, leadership, and professional development through collaborative interactions interdepartmentally, university-wide, and with local, regional, and national organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment, data analysis, and educational outcomes, as it relates to curriculum, learning objective and accreditation requirements.

Associate Professor - Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Assistant Professor with background, education, and training consistent with the following position requirements.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
