What Your Job Will Be Like:

As a guidance and control engineer in the Flight Systems and Software department you will work with a multi-disciplinary team to create autonomous navigation, guidance, pointing, and control solutions for a variety of aerospace platforms. On any given day you may be called upon to do some combination of the following activities:

  • Design and analyze guidance algorithms for aerospace vehicles
  • Design and analyze control algorithms for use in an autopilot
  • Design and analyze control algorithms for subsystems such as actuators, cold gas thrusters, and gimbals
  • Create or use system and subsystem models to simulate guidance and control algorithm performance within the platform for a variety of missions
  • Utilize software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-lop simulations to evaluate guidance and/or autopilot performance
  • Participate in ground testing of the aerospace platform, its subsystems, or components
  • Interface with firmware and software engineers to implement guidance and control algorithms for a particular mission
  • Interface with aero, mechanical, and electrical engineers on vehicle design constraints as they related to guidance and control

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience defined by the following parameters:¿
  • An Associate’s degree in a relevant discipline plus four (4) years of directly related relevant work experience; or¿
  • A High School Diploma plus eight (8) years of directly related relevant work experience.*¿
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

*Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D S&E Controls Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:¿

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).¿
  • Active DOE Q clearance or DOD TS security clearance.
  • Experience with classical control, modern control, or robust control. ¿
  • Thorough knowledge of and applied experience with designing, planning, and executing research, design, and development projects. ¿
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.¿

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:¿

  • PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with the guidance and control of hypersonic flight systems
  • Experience with pointing and control of gimbals and/or space systems
  • Demonstrated experience leading guidance and control research teams
  • Proficient with MathWorks’ MATLAB & Simulink
  • Experience with system identification and modeling dynamical systems
  • Experience with C/C++, Python, and Git
  • Experience with inertial sensor technologies
  • Experience with electromechanical systems integration and test

About Our Team:

The Flight Systems and Software Department creates navigation, guidance, pointing, and control algorithms and software for various flight systems, including hypersonic, nuclear deterrence, and space applications. We have experience in real-time flight software engineering, post-processing trajectory reconstruction, signal processing, simulation development, and analysis of testing results for a wide variety of navigational sensors and test modalities. 5323 owns two labs where benchtop, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop testing of flight software may be accomplished. Our activities span the range from applied research to fielded programs of record.
