Job Description

The High Performance Algorithms and Complex Fluids Group in the NREL Computational Science Center has an opening for a full-time research position in multi-scale, multi-fidelity modeling and uncertainty management in the context of modern extreme-scale high-performance computers as well as emergent low-energy architectures.

The successful candidate will collaborate with other NREL researchers, other national laboratories, universities, and industrial partners in efforts to develop computational solutions at scale for a variety of problems in renewable energy research. The candidate will work with minimal direction within multidisciplinary teams to develop efficient, scalable algorithms for high-fidelity model evaluation and distributed reduced-order surrogate training strategies that support outer-loop tasks such as optimization, characterization and analysis for a diverse range of renewable energy applications. Additionally, the candidate will explore the feasibility and applicability of emergent analogue architectures such as neuromorphic technologies, as low-energy alternatives to HPC systems for targeted NREL applications. Results and progress will be disseminated via peer-reviewed scientific publications, workshops, professional conferences and seminars.

Job duties and responsibilities of the position include:

  • Performing high-resolution simulations (e.g., computational fluid dynamics, micro-scale vehicle traffic, molecular dynamics) and constructing, training and validating computationally lightweight and/or reduced dimensional surrogate models
  • Writing/programming, debugging, and troubleshooting code for extreme scale computing hardware platforms.
  • Conducting and publishing novel original scientific research
  • Communicating effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Collaborating and writing proposals for original scientific research and developing original research concepts and strategies.
  • Expert programming in C++ (and, optionally, Fortran90), and applying a working knowledge of MPI, OpenMP and GPU accelerator programming using CUDA and HIP compilers.
  • Exploring emerging computing architectures and methods to leverage new computational methods to advance fundamental and applied research
  • Team-based software engineering for development, testing, documentation, release and support.
