Job Description
A student internship is available in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Energy Conversion and Storage Systems Center (ECaSS) to support numerical modeling of water power resources and technology. An ideal candidate will have the ability to work full time for 6 months starting in January 2025. This intern will work within NREL’s Water Power R&D group, which supports market acceleration for marine energy technologies.
This intern will support water power numerical modeling and analysis efforts, including:
- Working with researchers on the water power team to numerically model the turbulence associated with river currents
- Working with researchers on the water power team to numerically model the hydrodynamics of a heaving and pitching hydrofoil using NREL’s free vortex wake code OLAF
- Contributing to oral and written publication of the research results

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

- Current PhD student.
- Experience with laboratory modeling of river currents and hydrofoils.
- Experience coding within Fortran, Python, C++, or MATLAB environments
- Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Highly valued:
- Passion for renewable energy technologies and sustainability, with a specific interest in water power technologies
- Experience/interest in publishing journal papers
Preferred:
- Interdisciplinary coursework in renewable energy and hydrodynamics
- Engineering background and experience
- Experience working with the open-source code OpenFAST
- Works well in groups and individually with moderate supervision and feedback
- Minimum 3.25 GPA in the last completed semester

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
