Retail Technology is responsible for the world-leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of CommBank - from innovative product platforms for our customers, to essential tools within our business. We also use technology to drive simplicity and better banking, an essential component of great customer service underpinning a strong emphasis on software development as a craft and the adoption of industry best engineering practices.

You’ll be part of DevSecOps COE team which sit in the Retail Technology Engineering Domain. This team is responsible for driving uplift in DevSecOps practices across Retail Tech. Our mission is to enable engineers build and deliver changes in our applications more quickly & efficiently without comprising on risk and quality concerns. We do this by looking at ways to streamline and drive simplification in DevSecOps tooling, technologies, and processes across the group.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will drive important initiatives across our team, being responsible for the technical design, development, and rollout of key enhancements to our end-users. You will ensure that services are implemented so that solutions are resilient, secure and fit for purpose.
You will be a strong advocate for best practice, capable of challenging and being challenged, to deliver the best technical solutions for our customers.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Have a strong application development background and you are passionate about adopting and promoting DevSecOps best practices

  • Are constantly thinking outside the box and breaking boundaries to solve complex technical problems

  • Excel with autonomy – showing care in taking ownership over problems and communicating it with your team

  • Understand the complexity and challenges delivering scalable, secure solutions in an enterprise setting.

  • Work well in teams and have strong collaboration skills in driving continuous improvement initiatives

  • Have the ability to lead or coach/mentor others, proactively share knowledge, information, and solutions to problems

Tech Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

  • Experience leading a high-performing engineering team with a solid technical background in developing web applications and APIs using .NET, Java or similar.

  • Strong scripting skills (using PowerShell, Python, Bash or similar language )

  • Experience with database design and optimisation techniques

  • Excellent understanding of microservices architecture and API design patterns

  • Working knowledge of public cloud engineering – AWS preferred

  • Promote DevOps culture of CI/CD pipelines and Automation supported by world-class tools

  • Overseeing the governance, compliance, and operational health of services
