We are looking for a summer intern to join us on a 12-week experience where they will work on building and maintaining our HHMI websites and applications. We believe this will provide a fantastic opportunity for a developing Computer Science student to gain real insight into both large and small-scale website development.


This is a full-time (40 hours/week) hybrid internship position that will report to our Headquarters office in Chevy Chase, MD two days per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and work remotely three days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays).

Please note: If selected for an opportunity, interns are responsible for securing their own housing for the duration of the internship (12 weeks during the summer months - mid-late May to early-mid August).

What you’ll do:

  • Have the opportunity to work side-by-side with our Web Development team to support various web development and/or application development projects

  • Flex any existing skills working with technologies such as PHP/Drupal, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript while continuing to expand your knowledge and understanding.

  • Learn that web development requires more than just technical know-how - it includes important skills like collaboration between multiple business departments, design firms, and other members of IT to successfully implement projects.


What you bring:

  • An in-progress undergraduate degree in computer science or a related area of focus is required.

  • Some previous experience with web CMS technologies (such as Drupal, WordPress, or other similar frameworks) is desired.

  • Prior hands-on development experience writing: HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript

  • Familiarity with Figma (or other design tools), UNIX command line, Git, and/or DevOps pipelines would be a plus!

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
