The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

Pay Range: $175,900.00 - $272,600.00

Job Description

Job Summary:

Western Governors University is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join our team onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah. This individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and deploy scalable AI/ML solutions, with a focus on NLP and LLM models. This role combines technical expertise with hands-on contributions to shape the future of Ed Tech at WGU. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:  

  • Collaborate in defining NLP/LLM strategies and roadmaps.
  • ranslate business needs into AI/ML capabilities in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Contribute to the design and development of robust AI systems, ensuring scalability and performance.
  • Participate in the ML lifecycle, including research, training, evaluation, and deployment.
  • Work with teams to integrate ML solutions into WGU’s ecosystem.
  • Stay informed on AI advancements and suggest their practical application.
  • Support and mentor junior engineers to build technical expertise and foster growth.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities: 

  • Strong foundation in ML techniques, deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow), and cloud-based big data infrastructure.

  • Proficiency in Python programming and MLOps tools (e.g., Databricks, MLFlow, Sagemaker).

  • Familiarity with scalable, distributed systems and DevOps practices (e.g., Terraform is a plus).

  • Hands-on experience with stream-processing systems (e.g., Kafka, Spark Streaming).

  • Ability to develop and deploy production-grade AI/ML models.

 

Qualifications: 

  • M.S. or higher in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.

  • 7+ years of software development in cloud environments.

  • 5+ years in ML, including building and deploying large-scale models.

  • Demonstrated success in technical roles with cross-functional collaboration.
