The Informatics and Analytics department (I&A) serves patients, present and future, by enabling, improving, and transforming DFCI research, patient care, and operations through excellence in informatics and analytics.

POSITION SUMMARY:  

The successful candidate will manage the application of our research technology platform and services, build and maintain collaborative relationships with research faculty, coordinate strategic initiatives to enhance the functionality and accessibility of DFCI's computational cloud resources and information technology platforms. This position will report to the Technical Director of Research Computing Services.

The role requires a strong technical background with hands-on experience developing solution architectures for cloud technologies (Azure, Goggle Cloud, Amazon Web Services) with a focus on Microsoft’s Azure. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively in a research-focused multidisciplinary environment and lead a team of cloud engineers and architects who will provide cloud engineering services to DFCI clients. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of cloud services, and security best practices (including appropriate certification(s)),  and will develop, document, and promulgate cloud best practices across the I&A department and our DFCI clients.

  • Serve as a technical lead and informatics solutions architect, leveraging deep understanding of both the scientific domain as well as the computing technology to identify critical needs and propose impactful computational solutions, balancing long term benefits with short term imperatives
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary informatics efforts in a complex, matrixed environment
  • Help manage a complex annual portfolio of high-impact projects.
  • Identify opportunities and leverage resources across groups (e.g. computational, data management, and software engineering services) to maximize the practical value of our investment.
  • Promote a high level, platform oriented solution architecture approach while balancing scale and performance with flexibility, speed and agility
  • Maintain expertise on current advances in computational technology and practice and identify their applicability in the field of cancer research and care informatics
  • Plan and execute hands-on experiments and pilot projects to evaluate technologies and assist or drive the implementation of designed solutions.
  • Serve as a consultant and advocate for Research Computing resources and their application to support unique and innovative research needs.
  • Work closely with the infrastructure teams and provide input to help guide evolution and growth over time.
  • Serve as a cloud computing consultant that can review projects and make informed decisions whether to host in cloud services or on premises infrastructure.
  • Serve as information systems lead for basic research faculty and cross-functional research programs, including needs assessment, prioritization and solution architecture
  • Provide consultation services for research users, strategic centers and core facilities, and institute led initiatives
  • Serve as a community liaison, working with department administrators and faculty to both disseminate information and receive feedback.
  • Cultivate and manage partnerships with leaders in similar roles in academia and industry, and with external technology and solution providers
  • As a people manager, ensure all employees are treated with dignity and respect, have appropriate performance feedback and career development support
  • Performs other related duties as assigned / needed

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • 7+ years of experience designing and building enterprise-scale software solutions in a leadership role. Served as lead architect, lead engineer, or technical manager for successful scientific software solutions.
  • 5+ years scientific computing or research information systems experience in research environment. Experience may be within an academic or industry setting. 
  • 5+ years building customer-facing software solutions in a biomedical or health-care related environment.
  • MS in computer science, software engineering or equivalent with minimum 10 years of industry experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Proven track record delivering complex enterprise-grade applications 
  • Ability to lead the architecture and contribute to the implementation of multiple, concurrent projects in a fast-paced scientific and multidisciplinary environment, using a combination of matrix and direct resources 
  • Experience with advanced application architecture and design methodologies across multiple platforms, including design of APIs and the application of microservices architectural principles.
  • Hands-on experience using technology to support agile software development processes
  • Knowledge of IT systems and software with the ability to manage across the full spectrum of information technology operations in the context of a biomedical research organization
  • Experience with implementation of IT integration and workflow design in a research-focused environment.
  • Exceptional service orientation
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities; keen attention to detail
  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills, demonstrated ability to be effective within a complex organizational structure; excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to communicate technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in complex environments
  • Ability to effectively manage client and partner expectations and interact professionally with senior executives
  • Willingness to invest in understanding diverse stakeholder cultures, motivations and practices to enable consensus-based solutions.
  • Strong sense of balance and ethics, ability to consistently represent the interests and mission of the DFCI and act on behalf of its current and future patients.
  • Must be willing to serve both hands-on and in a management capacity, as needed.
