The Opportunity
The Director of Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) Compliance will be part of a global team to help manage and support all AI governance matters, including other related disciplines, for the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan including six key functions of the Compliance Operating Model: i) Advisory, ii) Policies and Procedures iii) Education and Training, iv) Monitoring and Surveillance, v) Compliance Risk Management, vi)Compliance Reporting to Senior Management and the Board.
As AI becomes more incorporated into Teachers’ enterprise strategy and operations, it is crucial to prioritize responsible AI practices. This role will also focus on promoting both enablement and compliance in alignment with broader business transformation goals and act as an interconnected agent to help achieve this. It will primarily focus on considering new risks that differ from traditional technology risks and facilitating the integration of AI tools and platforms responsibly and ethically. Although the role’s mandate will be to facilitate AI enablement and ensure responsible AI, AI risk management, and regulatory compliance throughout the enterprise, it will also help drive innovation and enablement of AI to enhance operational efficiency and productivity.

The Compliance Department’s vision is to be a trusted partner and advisor to help Teachers’ global business lines execute on business-specific AI priorities, effectively manage risk, regulatory compliance and related best practices in accordance with Teachers’ risk tolerance, and to help build a sustainable culture of compliance.
What you'll do
Support the development and execution of Teachers’ AI strategy aligned with overall business goals
Support the identification of opportunities to leverage AI for competitive advantage and operational efficiency, including acting as a subject matter expert on any risks related to AI investments
Support the research, development and deployment of AI technologies, staying abreast of emerging AI trends and technologies.
Monitor emerging legal, regulatory and industry standards in AI and provides strategic guidance to the organization.
Assist in the development and implementation of an AI compliance program that defines, develops, maintains, and implements policies and procedures to ensure ethical AI practices, including the day-to-day management of the AI Governance program.
Provide expertise and advice on the design and best practices of effective AI risk controls, metrics, compliance, performing risk management activities, and where required, support data risk management oversight including maintaining appropriate documentation (procedures, risk tiering methodology, escalation thresholds and reporting),
Identify pragmatic and right-sized mitigation strategies and controls related to the implementation of AI systems and AI use cases
Apply knowledge of analytic solutions and machine learning/AI to develop governance processes and practices that ensure risks are properly identified, understood, assessed, reported and monitored.

Develop strong partnerships and wors in close alignment with senior management, cross-functional teams and other risk functions and business partners to establish governance for the AI compliance program.
Develop or contribute to ad-hoc reporting to the Board, risk committees, and senior leadership, including the collection of metrics and reports
Drive the development and implementation of communication strategies for new processes and procedures, focusing on training and awareness programs related to AI compliance, risk management, and ethical practices.
Act as a thought leader in AI compliance, representing the organization in various industry forums and panels
What you'll need
Minimum 10 years of relevant progressive experience in compliance, risk management, legal or model governance
Degrees in a quantitative field, Business Administration, Computer Science, Data Science or a related discipline an asset
Expert knowledge of AI technologies, ML/AI model developments and ML/AI risk management best practices, relevant global laws, regulations, and ethical and risk management standards
Advanced understanding of data privacy principles, and global regulatory and legal obligations
Knowledge of algorithms, ex., rule-based systems, linear/logistic regressions, and strong understanding of IT and data management systems
Knowledge in and the ability to apply the principles of change management and project management with the proven ability to manage change, ambiguity and lead projects
Curious and proactive and agile learner interested in new technology, ML/AI risk management best practices, trends and developments in data and AI governance
Experience in developing policies and conducting training programs
Strong organizational, facilitation, communication, and presentation skills
Demonstrated experience in crisis management and excellent client service
Demonstrated experience and skills in collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving to achieve strategic objectives
Demonstrated experience and skills in providing excellent client service and partnering with peers
